Stephanne Martin developed an interest in pottery after taking classes at the Glassell School of Art in Houston while she worked her first job in layout design, post-graduation at Texas State. Her ceramics teacher left an impactful mark on her and Stephanne fell in love with the craft. She took more pottery classes at other studios and eventually began teaching some of her own classes, until she opened a commercial space running art shows, pottery classes, and events.
Ceramics are a difficult medium due to the steps that it takes to achieve the final product. From preparing the clay to throw on the wheel, drying a round of bisque firing (the first time the pottery goes in the kiln) and then to the glaze firing (second kiln turn), there are many intricate and time-sensitive steps that must be perfected for the correct result. All of Stephanne’s products are food, dishwasher, oven, and microwave safe, and are unique, one-of-a-kind art pieces.
Stephanne believes that Martin Studios is unique to other pottery brands because of her trustworthy thirty-five years in the industry as an artist. She has an authentic process in which glazes meld well together through years of experimenting. When looking at her pieces there is a textural combination that is unique to her mixes. She uses marbled and several other types of clay to achieve vibrant and diverse colors in her pottery.
For Stephanne, the most rewarding part of being a potter is seeing her artwork at venues and meeting all kinds of people through her events and classes. But being able to participate in people's major life events—such as making pieces for proposals and birthdays—is the part she loves the most.
Stephanne found out about the GO TEXAN program in 2021. Shortly after joining, she sold out all her products at the Houston Rodeo market. She has also worked on commission with GO TEXAN partner The Great Texas Candle Company, creating many of their coffee mugs and bowls. Stephanne described GO TEXAN as a supportive community and looks forward to exhibiting at more shows and rodeos in the future—and collaborating with more GO TEXAN Partners.
